“It is alleged that the father of the deceased was staying in Rukungiri District with his first wife, who is also the mother of the deceased, but they later separated. He left her in Rukungiri and went to Kameme village in Kihihi for casual work,” Maate stated.

Maate further explained that while in Kihihi, the father started cohabiting with the suspect, and they had been staying together for about six months. About two weeks ago, he brought the deceased to live with them and his stepmother.

“On May 1, 2026, the suspect allegedly assaulted the child severely. He was rushed and admitted to Kihihi Health Centre IV, where he was pronounced dead on May 2, 2026, at around 11:30am,” Maate said.

Police said investigations were immediately initiated, the body was examined, and the suspect was arrested.
